Harvard Business School Africa Business Conference ($50,000)

The Harvard Business School Africa Business Conference is hosting the New Venture Competition (NVC) to spotlight diverse entrepreneurs making a positive impact on the continent. The competition will be held on Friday evening, February 16th. NVC finalists will pitch their businesses to over 1,000 attendees and receive valuable feedback from experienced judges. Cash prizes of $30,000, $15,000, and $5,000 will be awarded to the top three winners. Additionally, finalists will have the opportunity to receive mentorship from Harvard MBA students and senior VC partners.

Requirements for Harvard Business School Africa Business Conference

Eligibility Criteria for Team:

  1. All entrepreneurs who are either African or have a strong focus on Africa and are dedicated to contributing to the continent’s future.
  2. Early stage startups, whether for profit or not-for-profit.
  3. The startup must have a primary focus on Africa, with the majority or all of its operational activities taking place within the continent.
  4. The team should consist of less than 50 employees.
  5. The startup must have been in operation for less than 5 years.
  6. The total funding raised by the startup should be less than $1,000,000 to date.

Evaluation criteria

The panel of judges will assess the likelihood of achieving economic success, considering factors such as the team’s plan, their experience, and the validation of critical assumptions. A clear and convincing presentation of the following aspects will be scrutinized:

  1. Product/Service: Understanding the nature of the offering and what sets it apart from competitors.
  2. Team: Evaluating the team’s relevance to the identified problem, their breadth and depth of skills, and their capacity to execute the plan effectively.
  3. Opportunity: Assessing the timing, market size and demand, the ability to penetrate the market, a compelling value proposition, and a robust business model.
  4. Context: Analyzing the regulatory, tax, political, and industry environment to determine its favorability for the venture.
  5. Competitive Advantage: Exploring the potential for competitors to easily replicate the business or product, identifying barriers to entry, assessing intellectual property (IP), hiring capabilities, and understanding the competitive landscape.
  6. Risk/Reward: Identifying strategies for managing both upside and downside risks associated with the venture.
  7. Structured Experimentation: Detailing how the value proposition and growth hypotheses will be validated through market testing.
  8. Financial: Scrutinizing the assumptions underpinning financial projections to ensure they are realistic and feasible.
  9. Traction & Execution: Defining specific milestones that will mark progress and success for the venture.
  10. Go-to-Market Strategy: Describing the methods for acquiring and retaining customers and the channels, partnerships, and sales and marketing approaches employed.
