(1) In general, our research challenges are open to eminent scholars within academia and leading experts from non-academic fields who offer valuable, complementary expertise to tackle these challenges. To be considered a “leading expert,” individuals should have attained the highest degree in their respective field, such as a Ph.D., MFA, J.D., M.D., or equivalent.

(2) Eminent scholars engaged in research and instruction at academic institutions, as well as students pursuing their terminal degrees in research fields that extend beyond the core of computer science, are encouraged to apply if they can provide unique and complementary insights into a given research challenge.


To be eligible for application, candidates must confirm that they are actively pursuing their terminal degree or have already earned it in their respective field or discipline. A terminal degree is defined as the highest-level academic or professional degree attainable within one’s field.

It is important to note that any fellow selected to be a part of the Microsoft Research AI & Society Fellows program who engages in inappropriate behavior, including but not limited to discrimination, harassment (including sexual harassment), or plagiarism, will result in the forfeiture of their funding and may be subject to disciplinary action.

  3. Submission of a “Statement of Interest” document, which should not exceed 3 pages in length. You may include appendices and citations if they are relevant.
