  1. Nomination by a Canadian institution: Only one institution can nominate the candidate, holding a Vanier CGS quotaFootnote 1.
  2. First doctoral pursuit: Candidates must be pursuing their initial doctoral degree. This includes joint programs (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) if they involve a substantial research component.
  3. Intention for full-time doctoral studies: Following the announcement of results, candidates should plan to engage in full-time doctoral studies and research at the nominating institution, commencing in the summer semester or the subsequent academic year. In joint graduate research programs, only the PhD part is eligible for funding.
  4. Study duration limitations:
    • No more than 20 months of full-time study in the doctoral program by May 1, 2024, is permitted. This calculation starts post-master’s degree completion.
    • No more than 32 months of full-time study in the doctoral program by May 1, 2024, is allowed in specific scenarios:
      • Enrolled in a joint graduate research program, regardless of prior master’s enrollment.
      • Direct transition from a bachelor’s to a PhD program.
      • Previous enrollment in a master’s program without completion, followed by entry into a doctoral program.
  5. Academic performance: Candidates must maintain a first-class average in the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Institutions may have their own definition of a first-class average.
  6. No prior doctoral-level scholarships: Applicants cannot have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for the purpose of commencing or completing a doctoral program.

Candidates must be nominated by the institution at which they want to study. Candidates cannot apply directly to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program. Vanier CGS application packages submitted through ResearchNet will first be submitted to the Canadian institution that will be putting forward their nomination.
